 Scholarship Essay Samples

Often encouraged by my peers, family, and providers in the classes I teach to pursue an Advanced Practice Nursing degree, I am pursuing my Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree. I trust that my 16 years of acute cardiac nursing experience coupled with the provider focus for the past 9+ years as a Physician onboarding support and Electronic Health Record Documentation Educator, will equip me to have a solid foundation in the program. I have a proven track record as a therapeutic mediator and an innovative leader who has excellent problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and relentless drive for process improvement.
My primary goal in obtaining my FNP is to assist foster care children to address their childhood traumas. Our family started doing foster care in 1997 for medically needy children; we have co-parented over 50 children and have adopted two through foster care. I understand the need for qualified and compassionate healthcare leaders to advocate for the children in foster care. I will use my degree to serve our community’s most vulnerable population, children of trauma.
The short-term goal for myself is to complete the MSN-Ed program through Grand Canyon University with excellence. This will set a solid foundation to pursue my post-graduate FNP certification and I anticipate starting that program within a few weeks of completing the MSN-Ed in May of 2020. Currently, I have a 3.87 GPA.  As for my long-term goal, I intend to advocate strongly for trauma treatment for all foster children. This will encompass furthering the understanding of childhood trauma to all educators, coaches, daycare providers, and anyone else who may provide care to children who have experienced trauma. The focus on foster children does not exclude the children who have not been in foster care yet have experienced traumas. The benefits to society related to properly addressing childhood traumas will be the prevention of the foster care to prison pipeline, equipping children to become survivors of trauma and not victims of trauma. This will give them the confidence to become their best selves and benefit society with their professions of choice.
Thank you for your consideration for this scholarship.

Dear Selection Committee,
I come from a long line of educators and have known from a young age that I have a natural ability and passion to teach. Experiences in my late teens and early twenties caused me to realize that also I have an inherent propensity to help others in need, and knew I wanted to become a nurse. After my first block of nursing school, I was asked by a professor to start tutoring, which I gladly accepted. I told my mom about how much I loved tutoring and she looked at me and said: “I can see the teacher in you; it’s the light in your eyes when you talk about it”. At that moment I decided I wanted to be a nurse educator. Currently, I work as a nurse for medically fragile special needs children in a classroom setting, which provides a perfect position that blends nursing and education. Additionally, each semester, I enjoy precepting nursing students from the local University, I enjoy the opportunity to expose them to a different area of nursing that I was not exposed to when I was in nursing school.
There are three ways I believe I can impact the future of nursing. These include furthering my education, continuing to stay current on evidence-based practice, and providing an optimal environment that facilitates learning for my students. My short term goal involves completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Grand Canyon University while my long term goals include completing a Master’s of Science in Nursing Education, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice in Educational Leadership by the end of 2023. Additionally, in both the short and long term, I plan to continue to utilize journals and articles available through Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, the American Nurses Association, and the National Association of School Nurses to keep me updated about evidence-based practice related to my current field. Another short term goal is to facilitate learning for our current students by finding ways to limit distractions created by medical procedures, allowing them to focus on their education. Finally, in the long term, I hope to obtain a position as a Nurse Educator so that I can positively influence the next generation of nurses entering the profession.
It would be an honor to be a Nu Upsilon Academic Scholarship recipient. Receiving the scholarship would allow me to continue my graduate education, where I hope to maintain academic excellence and fulfill my passion to be a Nurse Educator. Thank you for taking the time to review my qualifications for this scholarship and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future about my potential for this award.
